Roof Moss Cleaning

Moss is extremely damaging to roofs. It is important to clean up and remove all the moss from your roof before the moss causes your roof to fail. Roofs are exposed to a variety of hazards including moss, rain, wind, uv rays from the sun, algae, dirt, pine needles and contaminates.

They include:
  • Composition roofs also know as asphalt or shake roofing.
  • Cedar roofs which are made from natural cedar wood.
  • Slate roofs made from natural slate stone found in old riverbeds.
  • Tile roofs made from fire treated clay or cement.

All of these types of roofs can be damaged by the effects of moss and the moss root system know as rhizomes. The most popular types of roofs are composition roofs that are easily damaged by moss.

The moss will start to eat away at the roofing material and the moss will also start to live off of pollen, pollution debris, spores and nutrient rich rain water.

As the moss thrives in the shady sides of your roof it will cause the shake material on your composition roof to fall off and invite even more moss to grow on your roof.

As moss builds up it can cause rain water to not drain properly on your roof. Moss can grow underneath the edges of the shingles and water will start to build up under the individual shingles. Water may start to drain sideways and up your roof and you can see what all this improperly draining water can do to your roofing system. Acting like sponges, moss and lichens keep the roof damp causing even more growth.

As you can see it is extremely important to clean up and remove the moss on your roof as soon as possible to limit its damaging effects.

There are many chemical products on the market today that are made to kill roof moss. The fact of the matter is that these roof moss killing products may not work when your roof is still covered with moss.

Additionally, even if the moss is killed, it will still be attached to your roof and cause the damaging effects of staying wet and not allowing water to properly drain on your roof. Eventually more moss will grow and the cycle will continue. The moss should be removed and the roof treated periodically for best results.
